Leslie’s Disney Dream Comes True
Leslie, with Down syndrome and developmental delays, enjoyed a family trip to the Florida theme parks where she was able to meet the Disney characters and princesses. She walked through all the parks, met all of the characters, and rode on all of the rides. Disney World left the most lasting impression on her. Leslie also enjoyed some time at the beach and a chance to experiment with “astronaut life.”
Thank you from Leslie’s Family
“Thank you very much, Sunshine Foundation. Leslie and my family are very grateful for you making Leslie’s dream come true. A great moment was seeing Leslie walk and eager to walk in the parks, because she doesn’t like walking long distances. Leslie was so happy to see characters and ride on rides. Overall, an amazing dream trip.” – Leslie’s mom
Down Syndrome
Leslie has a diagnosis of Down syndrome, which is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This means that they have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This can affect how their brain and body develop. Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) is the most common chromosomal anomaly in humans, affecting about 5,000 babies born each year and more than 350,000 people in the United States.
